Project Management

Reflecting back to my role as a project manager, I am happy to say that I am very pleased with each group member. Everyone has worked consistently throughout the year and put a lot of time and effort into each task.

Challanges

One of the biggest challenges that I encountered was taking on Audio as we lost one of our group members. I didn’t feel confident because creating audio is not one of my strongest skills. However, now I can admit that I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot and I now I can add audio as one of my skills in my portfolio.

The project timeline/Gantt Chart was another challenge for me. I had never created a Gantt chart before and I found it challenging to find the appropriate program and template. I came across ‘Tom’s Planner’, which i was the best platform that I had come across. However, it turned out that in order to export the Gantt Chart, I had to subscribe for a minimum of 3 months. I took screenshots of the Chart and put them together in Adobe Photoshop. This was a quick and simple solution.

Group Meetings

Each week we booked a study room. We discussed the tasks completed and created a to do list on the whiteboard. We then assigned the tasks to each group member. Coming closer to the end of the project, we would spend up to 8 hours in a study  room working as a group on the project. I can honestly say, that i have never worked with such a productive and ambitious group.

Project Manager Tasks

As a project manager, it is my job to organise meetings, make appointment and recruit professionals if needed as well as make sure that all deadlines are met in time.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and distribute online questionnaire
  • Contact participants for interviews
  • Schedule and conduct interviews
  • Recruit a professional photographer for studio quality photographs
  • Design project timeline
  • Monitor questionnaire
  • Conduct Data Analysis and summarize research findings
  • Create, Schedule and Manage Social Media Campaign
  • Assist all group members with individual tasks if needed

Throughout the project, my main focus was our primary research.  This was a lot of work but I learned a lot from it and I feel that it has prepared me for my Masters Research which I will be doing next summer.

Website Hosting

We had problem with the free hosting ‘neocities’ because it would not allow us to upload videos. Luckily, I have a personal hosting platform which I host my portfolio website called ‘Hostagtor’. This was the perfect solution for us. We did however, need to purchase a domain. I viewed several domain options on ‘namecheap.com’. The standard domains such as .com, .ie, etc., were expensive so we decided to go with the cheapest option ‘shequalities.website’, which cost only 0.75 cent a year. This is the best option that I could find and now we know that our website will always be live.

Photographs

After the photographs were captured, I edited them in Adobe light-room. These images are used throughout our project and can be seen on our website, social media posts and videos.

I found the technical document easier to do than the Design/Script document. I think It’s because I had already worked on a report that volume so it was easier to organise who is going to do each section and how to structure it.

Research Question

‘An investigation into unconscious gender bias among students in third level education’. The answers we seek to find out from our questionnaire and interviews are as follows:

  • Do students categorize males and females into traditional stereotypical gender roles?
  • How many students know what unconscious gender bias is?
  • Are students aware that implicit bias affects males and females differently?
  • Does unconscious gender bias exist within third level education?

Research Methodology 

The research has been carried out through an online questionnaire and interviews. The reason for choosing this approach is to cross reference both sets of data through the method of triangulation. The questionnaire data has been collected by random sampling and has received 103 responses, which is exactly what we had hoped for in order to have confidence in our results. From the questionnaire, I contacted volunteers who wished to participate further with this research. I interviewed 5 participants. 

Findings

This was the most difficult part of the research. It took a full week for me to complete this section. I was thoroughly analyzing each question.  I summarized our findings and highlighted what stood out the most, which are the following points:

  • Majority of participants perception of unconscious gender bias is not correct
  • Some perceive gender bias as sexism
  • Women are more reluctant to apply for a job due to a lack of confidence
  • More women are gender biased towards marriage than men
  • Construction is perceived as a male dominated industry

Audio

I had recently produced short glitch sounds, recorded voice-overs and created a background ambiance. As audio is a small aspect of our project, this was one of the shortest sections of our technical document.

Social Media

Social Media Campaign content is completed and ready to be published. We are publishing content each day. This is a very exciting part because I like watching the user engagement. I feel that by tagging famous companies and organisations, we have reached more people.

PR Plan

I put together a PR plan, and added some photos of our project as well as our group photo. I sent an email to the local newspapers such as: Dundalk Democrat, The Argus, Dundalk Leader, Drogheda Leader and The Northern Standard.  Unfortunately, I have not received any responses as of yet.

The content consists of animated gifs, short infographic videos, famous quotes and shocking facts.

Social Media Engagement 

The social media campaign aims to interact and engage with the audience. I have found it difficult to get many followers on Twitter and Instagram. Instagram proved to be difficult to post videos and animated gifs, so we decided that we will stick with Twitter and Facebook as we have started to build a followers list on those two platforms. Facebook is our dominant social media platform which currently has 80 followers and Twitter only has 13 followers.

I found that by tagging and hash tagging current and trending organisations such as #HeForShe, #MeToo, #TheWProject, @plainjaaane, @AtFalks & @francescavallo, we have reached a lot of attention. Facebook reached 197 people and Twitter reached 85 views.

Audio

The project is heavily based on graphics and programming, therefore audio is a small aspect of the project.  Audio has been designed for the social media ads that will be used to draw and attract the target audience to the website and to the end of year exhibition. Audio has been designed for short trailer ads and inforgraphic video ads. 

Trailer Video

The audio design consists of glitching, distortion and blurs. Several sounds have been created using audacity by generating white, pink and brown noise with audacity. Sounds have been edited and layered together creating several different short snappy compositions. Pro tools has been used to generate the eerie background track by using the MIDI controller to create an instrument track. Two keys were created and layered to create the erie uncomfortable sound.  

4.2.2.2 Infographic Ad

The design for this was different. The inforgraph videos use a voice over which was recorded using a zoom recorder in a sound booth. These sounds were then edited in Audacity to reduce the noise and to cut out unnecessary sounds. The same process was used as stated previously to record the subtle backing track.

Data Analysis

I found this part of the research the most difficult. Many participants who answered the open ended questions of the questionnaire wrote answers that were not applicable. When we released our questionnaire, we were investigating gender bias. As our project progressed, we started to investigate unconscious gender bias. Therefore, I feel that we didn’t ask the participants the right questions. From our questionnaire, we wanted to find out; if there is gender bias in third level education, if stereotypes exists and do they affect ones confidence, if males/females would apply for a job if they had 60% of the required skills.

The following facts stood out to me the most:

  • Just over half (51.4%) of participants feel that students are not always seen as equal in third level education.
  • 21.3% of participants feel that their gender has affected how their work has been valued.
  • 13.6% of participants feel that there is gender bias in third level education.
  • 47.6% of participants have experienced or witnessed a gender bias situation.
  • Almost half (45.5%) of the participants agreed that Marriage/Wedding is more important to women. This intrigued me and I wanted to find out if one gender is more biased towards marriage than the other. I divided the participants into males and females and counted how many males and how many females agreed with this statement. 54.7% of females agreed that marriage/wedding is more important to women and only 35.4% of males agreed with this statement. This surprised me, because I thought that it would be neutral or the other way around.
  • The majority (84.5%) of the participants would apply for a job if they had 60% of the required skills. However, 15.5% of the participants would not apply. This question is based on the Mc Kinsley (2017) report, which stated that females are less confident to apply for a job unless they have the majority (80% – 100%) of required skills. To investigated if this was true, from the 15.5% of participants who would not apply for the job, I divided them into male and female categories. I counted how many males and how many females stated that they would not apply and shockingly Mc Kinsley (2017) report was true. I found that 19% of females would not apply for the job due to lack of confidence compared to 4% males.  One of the many quotes that stood out to me is: ”Would be scared of wasting time and rejection” and ”60% trained is just over half trained. How can one feel qualified with half training skills. I would feel grossly inadequate and embarrassed to approach a job with not enough skills”. 

Analysing the data, the following themes themes were identified.

  • Majority of participants perception of unconscious gender bias is not correct
  • Some perceive gender bias as sexism
  • Women are more reluctant to apply for a job due to a lack of confidence
  • More women are gender biased towards marriage than men
  • Construction is perceived as a male dominated industry

If I was to do this again, I would write down what exactly I want to find out and then design the questionnaire accordingly. I feel that we didn’t know what exactly we wanted to find out when we sent out the questionnaire. The questions we asked are very relevant and we received some great responses, however, I have come to realise that we wanted to find out to find out participant perception of unconscious gender bias and if it is correct as well as impacts that it could have on male and female students. Luckily, we realized this before we conducted the interviews. During the interviews, each participant was asked their perception of unconscious gender bias, if they think that males an females are affected differently and to share their unconscious gender bias experience. 3 out of 5 participants who were interviewed did not know what unconscious gender bias was and 1 out of 4 participant who understood what unconscious gender bias is, stated that it did not impact females differently to males.  

 

Collecting Data

Questionnaire 

I re-sent our questionnaire via college email 2 times and once on our Creative Media Facebook page to reach the desired amount of respondents. Our questionnaire was closed when we reached 103 participants which is exactly what we had hoped for so that we would have confidence in our results. The questionnaire has equal amount of male and female respondents which I feel is very important because there is no gender bias in our results.  I selected all the participants who wished to participate further with this research by leaving their email address at the bottom of the questionnaire. I contacted all participants who I felt could elaborate on their questionnaire responses and that could provide deeper insights into the topic.

Interview

Unfortunately not all people responded to my email. I received 6 responses of participants who were willing to come in for an interview. I booked two study rooms and interviewed 5 participants. Unfortunately participant 6 was a no show. I emailed participant 6, who apologies and asked to email the interview questions. Unfortunately, i did not receive a response afterwards. The interview was semi structured. All participants were asked to elaborate on some of the answers they provided on their questionnaire as well as 3 new questions.

  1. In your opinion, what is unconscious gender bias?
  2. In your opinion, does unconscious gender bias affect males and females differently?
  3. Could you please tell me about your experience of an unconscious gender bias situation?

It was interesting to hear what each participant had to say about the topic. Opinions as expected were different and I realized that some participants perception of unconscious gender bias was not correct. Many people refer to unconscious gender bias as sexism or conscious bias, without acknowledging or understanding the word ‘unconscious’. I feel that our project will inform people of what unconscious gender bias is.

Interview Transcripts

Initially, I tried to find a program  that would transcribe the interview for me however, I couldn’t find anything that worked for me. The Voice-To-Text feature in google docs also didn’t work for me. It didn’t understand me and therefore wrote some words that it thought I said which were incorrect. I gave up on searching for a program and started to transcribe the recordings manually. I found this part very time consuming and tiring. The transcripts were very long as I transcribed every word that the participant said. One interview was very hard to hear as the participant kept moving away from the phone which was recording the interview. This interview took longer than it should have.  I transcribed 2 interviews a day for 2 days and the last interview on day 3.

WIP #2

Research

The survey has now been closed. We reached 103 responses, which is exactly what we had hoped for to have confidence in our results. The next stage is to conduct a data analysis.

Approximately half of the participants have witnessed a gender bias situation. From which 26.2% think it is unconscious bias and 25.2% think it is conscious bias. 

The interviews have been conducted and transcribed. I interviewed 5 participants who had left their contact details on the survey. Data analysis is currently a working progress and should be completed within 2 weeks. Interestingly, after conducting the interviews we have realized that 2 out of 3 people do not know the definition of unconscious gender bias. 

Social Media

Our social media campaign started on Monday. Our first post was a Poll asking the audience if they believe that unconscious gender bias exist within our society. So far, everyone has voted ‘yes’, it does exist.

The aim of the social media campaign is to simply engage the audience as well as raise awareness of what unconscious gender bias is. Since we are no longer doing a Virtual Reality experience, we have decided to create animated Gifs to attract our demographic. These Gifs will be posted through our social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

I have created several GIFS using Graphics that Aine had previously designed for our project. The GIFS were created in Adobe After Effects. To create the glitch effect I followed a YouTube tutorial.

Gender Bias Test

After we received our feedback from our WIP presentation, we took into consideration that our Virtual Reality room does not really suite our research question. Initially, we aimed to create a blank room where the user can hear subconscious thoughts of an individual who has been impacted by unconscious gender bias in that moment. We hoped to create two realities that the user can enter. An experience through the eyes of a male and an experience through the eyes of a female.

Even though, we were keen on developing this idea further, we realized that what we really want to do is to raise awareness of unconscious gender bias. Coming across an implicit gender bias test designed by Harvard a few month ago, we thought that maybe we could re-create the test. We want to design the test specifically for the creative industry. One of our group members Kevin, started to research and design the content for the test while our programmer Aoife, started to research how to develop the test.

Aoife and I spoke to a few of our lecturers to seek advice on the best way that we can re-create this test. After a few meetings with different lecturers and several attempts to develop the test, Aoife understood how to code it using HTML. In the mean time, I am focusing on our primary research and our social media campaign.

WIP #1

Research

Our questionnaire was distributed 4 days ago and it is still live. So far we have received 54 responses but wee are hoping to reach at least 100.

In the pie chart, it can be seen that 37% of the participants think that stereotypes affect ones confidence moderately, 22.2% stated extremely, 20.4% stated very and only 14.8% don’t think that stereotypes can affect ones confidence. It is clear that majority of participants feel that stereotypes can impact an individual.

In this pie chart, approximately half of the participants have experiences a gender bias situation. Further, participants were asked if the think it was conscious or unconscious gender bias. 24.1% of participants thought it was conscious and 22.2% thought it was unconscious. This shocked me because I was expecting for the majority to respond that it was unconscious bias.

Social Media

I have set up 3 social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. Social media content will be based on our questionnaire results. The campaign will roll out for 5 weeks and consist of posting content on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Week 5 will be dedicated for advertising our Nexus Project and inviting the audience to attend the end of year FIS 2018 at DKIT.  The aim of the social media campaign is to engage the audience before the launch of our project.

Audio

I am still waiting for the audio scripts and graphics to be developed so that I can start developing the appropriate sound elements. At the moment, I have been playing around with Adobe Audition and Audacity.

Timeline

Our questionnaire has been distributed and will be closed on Monday. The next stage is the questionnaire’s data analysis. This part is running as scheduled. However, our interviews will be running slightly behind due to the Easter break because our participants are DKIT students.

The audio is a working progress but I am hoping to complete it by the end of April. I would like to do user testing with students and lecturers in the first week of May.

Social media will be completed before schedule as the content and social media plan is 80% complete. The campaign will start running in the last week of April.
